Super pale, super fizzy, and super cheap, the Light/Lite beers of Budweiser, Miller, and Coors held permanent residence in my refrigerator. I believe that's why so many of the popular homebrewers profess 'ranges' of target number instead of specifics while also suggesting 'trial and error'.įor me, My efficiency that I get with my crush allows me to use the water to grist ratio that I want and to be able to batch sparge with enough water so as to not go below 1.012 in my sparge PH to avoid possible tannin extraction, to hit my target numbers and do a full wort boil for 90 minutes. I think it's a moot point to compare numbers but to simply say. are you producing a beer that has the fewest number of flaws, hitting all your water chemistry, PH points, temps and times that work for your system. For me, my efficiency is a number that let's me know when I've made a possible error in my process for a given recipe so I can correct it if need be. A certain amount of grain, water on my system will yield different results than an identical amount on another system that is making the same batch size but different equipment. I truly think efficiency is more a less a number that pertains to each individual brewer and their equipment. Say after fermenting and dry hopping, transferring, losses to trub, yeast, hops, tubing, that last little bit of beer in the bottom of the bottling bucket, etc., you get 48 12oz bottles. You will get close with the typical numbers given for grain types in Beer Smith and such.ĮDIT: In all actuality, real Brewhouse Eff would also take into consideration losses in packaging too. To do the equation you need to know that the 100% yield is for your grain. After racking off all that Willamette you have 5 gallons in the fermenter. You boil for an hour and have 5.5 gallons of 1.050 OG. Lets say your pre-boil OG is 1.042 6.5 gallons. So you do a 5 gallon SmAsH with Willamette (2 X what you think you would need + 4 oz right?). Then divide your actual pre-boil GU by this number. For Extract take the GU of what your full yield should be for your pre boil volume (36 GU for Marris Otter X 10# / 6.5 gallons should have an OG of 1.055 if you got 100% extract efficiency). There is a difference between Extract Eff and Brewhouse Eff.

I get around 78-80% if I do a 60 minute mash.
